We were passing through Boise and it was lunch time. There was a place called BBQ4Life that we found that had a lot of vegan options and we wanted to give it try. We really appreciate when a restaurant makes an effort to not cook with eggs, dairy or meat. They have a lot of other options for people that would like to have things with those ingredients. This place had a whole section on the menu that was just vegan or plant based.
BBQ4Life is located in the Vista Village Shopping Center, which is not too far off the freeway to the north. They were not too busy when we stopped in but there were others in there eating so that was a good sign. After a quick review of the menu, talking with the waitress about her favorites and the most popular items were, we decided to try the mushroom mozzarella burger with potato salad and a side of the vegan mac and cheese.
The burger is made with their house made greens and beans patty topped with sauteed mushrooms, onions, vegan “moZZarella” cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickles with vegan mayo on a toasted bun. This was very good but very messy. All the insides kept sliding out and I kept having to rebuild it as I ate. All of their sandwiches come with fries, spicy cashew coleslaw (vegan) or red potato salad (vegan). We went with the red potato salad but also ordered a side of their vegan mac and cheese.
The potato salad was very good. In fact, I wish we got a little more with this. The side of mac and cheese was good but not like traditional mac and cheese. It was more like pasta with a cheesy type sauce. It was good but not what I was thinking. It’s very hard to find a vegan cheese replacement that fits the bill. But again, I do appreciate restaurants that make an attempt to create these dishes. I would try this again, but now knowing what it is like, I would probably like it much better.
Overall, the place was clean, the staff was friendly and the prices were not too bad. If we are passing through the Boise area again, I would stop to try out some of their other vegan options.
