We have had a vegan sushi restaurant on our list of places to try for a long time, but for some reason we just have not made it there. It’s not like it’s a long way away. In fact, it is only two miles down the road. Well tonight was the night to go try it out. Wellness Sushi, and all plant-based sushi restaurant. It made Yelp’s list of top 100 places to eat in the US in 2023, right here in Denver. Located next to the Tattered Cover bookstore on Colfax, just a couple blocks south of City Park. We have had vegan sushi in the past at a place in Las Vegas called Daikon Vegan Sushi, and it was delicious. So, we were betting this was too.
When you walk in, you will notice that it is not a very big place, in fact, kind of small. You go up to the counter to order, then go find a seat. They have kind of an awkward order screen right in front of the regular cash register, but you can order for either. I saw a few people that ordered from the screen and from the guy at the register. The menu is a little over whelming and there are no pictures as to what things are. Maybe the screen has pictures to see what you are ordering.
Next best thing, ask the guy at the front counter what are your favorites and what are the most ordered things on the menu. He pointed out more than a few things but the first two were Maki Rolls. They have many other options and I am sure they are all pretty good. The 1) Krunchy Krab, their Wellness Krab Salad, Avocado, Cucumber, Crispy Onion, Spicy Sauce, Sushi Sauce. The second recommendation was the 3) Ebi Tempura Roll, this is a Vegan Shrimp Tempura, Wellness’s Krab Salad, Avocado, Cucumber, Tempura Crisps, Spicy Sauce, Sushi Sauce. We started with this and would order more if we were still hungry.
After we scarfed this down like we haven’t eaten for a month, it was delicious by the way, we decided that we were still hungry and need some more. Probably not, but we wanted more. Next, we asked the guy again what his favorites were in the Okinawa Origri section. These are kind of like sushi sandwiches, seaweed and rice with different flavors inside. He said that his favorites were the 3) Organic Fried Tofu Onigiri, and the 5) Ebi Tempura Onigiri. We went with the Organic Fried Tofu Onigiri, which has the Omnipork Spam, Vegan Tamago the Fried Tofu wrapped in rice and seaweed with the choice of their spicy mayo. We ordered the spicy mayo on the side but I think that normally it comes on it. You can also get it with tonkatsu sauce.
Overall, I can see why this place is on the top 100 list of places to eat in the US. Why have we not been here sooner? I think that we will be back again soon and may have to start down the menu and try everything in the place!
