Exploring the vegan culinary scene of a city can be an adventure, filled with new flavors and experiences. Portland is the mecca for vegan restaurants and plant-based options. During our visit to see family and friends, we had the pleasure of dining at The Sweet Hereafter, a small local bar that promised a unique twist on classic comfort food. As you step inside you are greeted by a cozy atmosphere of a local hangout where all come to get a cool refreshing drink and not the usual bar food. Everything on the menu is plant based, it was an enticing array of options. We couldn’t resist trying their signature Buffalo Sub and Mac and Cheese meals.
The Buffalo Sub sandwich was a perfect fusion of flavors and textures. The crispy yet tender marinated soy curls were coated in a zesty buffalo sauce, which added a delightful kick to each mouthful. The crunch of fresh lettuce and the creaminess of ranch dressing balanced out the heat, creating a harmonious symphony of flavors. The sub roll itself was perfectly toasted, providing a satisfying crunch with every bite. You have to appreciate the creativity that went into crafting this unique sandwich.
Their take on Mac and Cheese was nothing short of extraordinary. The creamy, gooey mac and hefeweizen cheese, created a rich and decadent sauce that coated each macaroni noodle perfectly. What truly set this dish apart was the innovative toppings. Crispy onions and the panko breadcrumbs added a delightful crunch, while the optional vegan bacon bits provided another crunchy contrast to the creamy pasta. This Mac and Cheese wasn’t just a meal, it was a culinary experience that celebrated the familiar flavors of childhood mac and cheese while adding a grown-up twist.
Beyond the delectable dishes, The Sweet Hereafter offered an inviting ambiance that enhanced the overall experience. The rustic decor, warm lighting, and friendly staff created an atmosphere that felt both casual and sophisticated. Whether you’re visiting for a quick lunch break or a leisurely meal with friends, the restaurant’s cozy charm makes it a perfect spot to unwind and indulge in culinary delights.
Thank you, mom and dad, for running around with us and exploring areas of Portland that are new to all of us. Sorry that this was all plant-based, and they didn’t have some meat.
Thanks for wandering with us,
