We recently took a trip to Solvang, California. We wanted to visit during Christmas, but we had the opportunity to visit in March. It’s a charming Danish-style village in the heart of Santa Barbara County. Known as the “Danish Capital of America”. Solvang is a beautiful and unique destination that’s unlike anywhere else in California. Founded by Danish immigrants in 1911, this village has retained its Old-World charm and is now a popular tourist destination known for its windmills, bakeries, and beautiful architecture.
One of the first things you’ll notice is the abundance of Danish-style buildings and decorations. From the windmills and half-timbered houses to the street signs named to pay respect to famous Danes and locations. This village truly feels like a slice of Denmark in the heart of California.
But there’s more than just its unique architecture. The village is also home to some fantastic restaurants and cafes, including a number of bakeries that specialize in Danish pastries and treats. Check out our blog of Ramen Kotori. While visiting you have to try the aebleskivers (pronounced able-skeevers), although not vegan and we did not find any there that were. They are small, donut hole-type, fluffy pancakes that are a traditional Danish dessert, dusted with powdered sugar alongside raspberry jam for dipping.
There is also a thriving wine scene, with a number of wineries and tasting rooms in and around the village. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or just looking to try some new varietals, it is a great place to explore the local wine culture.
For those who love the outdoors, Solvang has plenty to offer as well. The surrounding Santa Ynez Valley is filled with hiking trails, horseback riding opportunities, and scenic drives. If you’re a golf enthusiast, be sure to check out the nearby River Course at the Alisal – a beautiful and challenging course that’s beloved by locals and visitors alike.
Solvang is a wonderful destination for anyone looking for a unique and charming experience. From the Danish-style architecture and delicious pastries to the wine tasting and outdoor adventures, there’s something for everyone in this picturesque village. Maybe we will make it back here during Christmas time to see the festive lights and decorations.
