While we were in Steamboat Springs, I couldn’t pass up a day of snowboarding at Steamboat Ski Resort. I was on my own for the day and thought this was the perfect time to go check it out. This resort, in the Rocky Mountains offers some of the best snowboarding and skiing in the country. I have snowboarded here once before about four years ago, so it has been a while since I have been on these slopes, or any for that matter.
Steamboat is a premier snow sports destination, featuring world-class terrain, facilities, and services. The resort boasts over 160 trails, 18 lifts, and 2,965 acres of skiable area, including the famous Mavericks Terrain Park, which has over 50 features for all levels of riders. I was not going to be visiting that part of the mountain, I needed all my bones in one piece. The resort also offers lessons, rentals, dining, shopping, and entertainment options for guests of all ages and preferences. 2023-2024 trail map.
One of the highlights of the resort is the scenic Wild Blue Gondola ride, it is the longest and fastest 10-person gondola in North America. This new gondola takes you from the base to the summit of Sunshine Peak, at an elevation of 10,384 feet. Wild Blue is the newest addition to the resort and just opened the upper and lower section this 2023-2024 ski season. The gondola operates daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and the ride takes about 12 1/2 minutes to get from the base to the top. There are 171 cabins, each with a capacity of 10 people per cabin, capable of moving 3200 people an hour. Along the way, you can enjoy stunning views of the Yampa Valley, the Flat Tops Wilderness, and the surrounding peaks. The gondola is also a great way to access some of the best trails on the mountain, such as High Noon, Storm Peak South, and Three O’clock.
My adventure began with a ride on the Wild Blue Gondola, a scenic journey that transported me from the base to the mountain’s summit. I was nestled in a comfortable gondola cabin, surrounded by panoramic views of snow-laden trees and the crisp winter air. The ascent is not just a means of reaching the top of the mountain, but an integral part of the experience, offering a preview of the breathtaking landscape that awaits. As you ascend higher, the landscape unfolds like a winter wonderland beneath your feet. The evergreen trees glisten with fresh snow, and the slopes beckon with promises of excitement. The beauty lies not only in the pristine white slopes but also in the azure sky and the dazzling sunlight that bathes the surroundings. The contrast of the white snow against the deep blue sky creates a visual spectacle that captivates, making the journey as enchanting as the destination.
Steamboat is famous for its Champagne Powder®, which is a trademarked term for the light, dry, and fluffy snow that falls in the area. The snow is so fine that it sparkles like champagne in the sun, and it makes for a smooth and effortless ride. The resort averages about 350 inches of snowfall per year, and it has one of the longest seasons in Colorado, from late November to mid-April. However, this day it was not quite Champagne Power® in most places, in fact it was a little icy here and there since it had not snowed a lot in the last few weeks. December in Steamboat Springs is characterized by clear, sunny days with temperatures that embrace the true essence of winter. The cold weather adds a refreshing crispness to the air. It’s a unique experience to bask in the warmth of the winter sun while being surrounded by a snowy wonderland.
I spent most of my day riding the Wild Blue Gondola to the top of Sunshine Peak and the following the intermediate and advanced trails back down to the very bottom. It offered a variety of terrain, from groomed runs to moguls, glades, and bowls. Some of my favorite trails were Heavenly Daze, Vagabond, and Shadows, which had a nice mix of challenge and fun.
Snowboarding at Steamboat Springs in December is more than just a sport; it’s a journey into the heart of winter’s beauty. The gondola ride, with its panoramic views, sets the stage for an adventure that promises both adrenaline and tranquility. I would highly recommend Steamboat Springs to anyone who loves snowboarding, skiing, or winter in general. It is a winter wonderland that you will never forget.
