There are First Fridays everywhere, in fact in the Denver area there were 4 or 5 within a 20-mile radius this first Friday of August. We decided to walk down to Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe, which this was supposed to be their biggest first Friday, it’s just around the corner for us. They blocked off Santa Fe from W. 11th Ave all the way down to W. 6th Ave. All the shops and local artists set up on Santa Fe street, along with the shops opening their doors to the crowds. We stopped off at Rocky Yama Sushi to get a few veggie rolls before walking around. We needed a quick bite of energy to keep us going for the night and we were not sure what the food carts would have for us. It was supposed to start at 5:30pm, but around that time there were not a lot of people and most artists and shops were still setting up. But over the evening it got pretty crazy and there were people everywhere. We walked south from Rocky Yama all the way down to 6th Ave checking out local artists, art galleries and antique shops along the way. Had to look for some postcards, but didn’t find anything.
There were food carts all up and down the street, and they did have something for everyone. We stopped at a small food cart that was selling New Zealand Ice Cream, and they have a vegan pina colada which we had to try. It was pretty delicious. Check out this place if you want to try some vegan or regular ice cream. It was very creamy which is something that I have found is hard to find in vegan ice cream.
We had fun exploring all the art shops and galleries and hidden alleyways up and down Santa Fe that we didn’t know was there. I have driven down this street more times than I can remember and didn’t know a lot of that was there. There were a lot of people doing the same, exploring, eating and enjoying the different art that was on display. By the time we made it down to 6th and back, it was getting dark and there were thousands of people out and about. We had been there for at least 3 hours, walked a few miles at that point and we were getting tired. We called it a night and walked back home in the warm summer heat of the evening.
We had a great time, if you enjoy art, food and the excitement and energy of all those people, we would recommend checking it out. We will be back out again at some point to check out another First Friday somewhere else across the city.
Thanks for wandering with us,
