Exploring St. Maarten: A Day of Jeep Adventures and Tropical Beaches
Our day began early at 6 am, anticipating the exploration of St. Maarten. With a swift cleanup and a room service breakfast, we aimed to be off the ship by 8:30 am. However, securing our Jeep rental had been a challenge due to communication hurdles with “The Jeep Plug” and “Blue Bubbles Sports & Tours.” Their preference for WhatsApp communication and a credit card surcharge posed initial obstacles.
As we neared the island, a daunting rainstorm cast a shadow, but fortunately, it passed quickly, revealing sunny skies. Despite the island already hosting two cruise ships, we decided to check for Jeeps at EDC, bypassing the reservation hassle. Thankfully, they had plenty available.
Opting to circle the island clockwise per the rental attendant’s advice, we headed to the airport. At Sunset Bar and Grill, located on the south side of the beach and ocean side of the runway, we savored drinks and witnessed planes landing, well two. As well as capturing a thrilling jet landing in a 360 video. You should be able to see it below.
Continuing on to the main town and capital on the French side, Marigot, we explored the town’s food vendors but decided to skip the crowded bakery. Moving north to Grand Case, we discovered a beachside gem, Sunset Cafe. The serene beach, calm blue waters, and white sand provided the perfect setting for a quick lunch and extended beach time.
A refreshing swim in the salt-laden waters revealed the beach’s topless status, offering a relaxing experience. The guys and I decided to go topless, ha, but the ladies decided against this. With efficient time management, we returned the Jeep, exploring the cruise dock shops ahead of schedule. After boarding and taking advantage of the ship’s adult-only hot tubs, we relaxed as the ship set sail back to Florida. Do you say set sail on a ship that has no sails?
After a brief rest and quick dinner, the celebration continued with a show for Jodi’s birthday, complete with balloons and a rendition of “Happy Birthday.” The evening’s entertainment, the Tap Factory show at the Royal Theater, surprised us with its unique blend of tap dancing, drum music, and gymnastics. Despite the day’s adventures, we called it a night, heading back to our room to unwind.
Reflecting on St. Maarten, the island’s duality (Dutch and French sides) fascinated us, but the prevalent poverty left us somewhat disheartened. Tomorrow promises a relaxing day at sea, a welcome break from alarms and room service calls.
