Larkspur, Colorado is home to one of the most enchanting events in the region—the Renaissance Festival. I have seen the advertisements on TV over the last few years but we have never been to it. Well, this weekend we wandered down to the Renaissance Festival in Larkspur, it was like stepping back in time to an era of knights, maidens, and medieval merriment. It was not what I expected at all, in fact it was a lot bigger and cooler than what I thought it was going to be. One word of advice, bring some cash. They don’t except credit cards, but they do have ATM’s throughout the village if you run out.
The air is filled with the sounds of lively music, the aroma of delectable food, and the colorful sights of elaborate costumes and village scenes. A lot of people visiting the festival, dressed up in many different costumes, fairies with wings and the elf ears, knights in armor, medieval costumes with the swords, Scottish kilts. Upon entering, you find yourself transported to a world where chivalry and pageantry reign supreme. I felt like we had come across a medieval town in the middle of the woods in Europe.
The Renaissance Festival is a celebration of the medieval period, where history comes alive in every corner. The festival grounds are meticulously designed to replicate a medieval village, complete with quaint shops and artisan workshops. Strolling through the narrow, dirt streets, you encounter a vast array of characters—royalty, jesters, knights, and villagers—each adding their unique charm to the atmosphere.
The festival offers a plethora of activities and entertainment for all ages. You might find yourself engrossed in the skillful artistry of blacksmiths, potters, and weavers. Acrobats and jugglers dazzle the crowd with their impressive feats, while musicians and entertainers fill the air with melodies from centuries past.
One of the highlights of the Renaissance Festival is the jousting tournament. As you find your seat in the grassy area, you can feel the energy mounting. The clash of steel and the thundering hooves of armored knights echo through the arena as they compete in a daring display of skill and bravery. The crowd erupts in cheers and applause, swept away by the excitement of the spectacle.
Food lovers are in for a treat at the festival, with a gluttony of savory and sweet delights to indulge in. The aromas of roasted turkey legs, sausage on a stick, corn on the cob waft through the air, enticing visitors at every turn. Whether you crave a traditional medieval feast or prefer to sample exotic treats, the festival offers a wide range of culinary options to satisfy your appetite. However, for the plant-based or vegan, there are not a lot of options. They did have a smashed potato, and portable mushroom sandwich, but beyond that I didn’t see many other options. I would guess that there were not a lot of vegans or plant-based diets in the medieval times. I don’t have any pictures of the food, we only had a garlic smashed potato, and it was not bad, but not very exciting either.
For the younger attendees, the festival is a treasure trove of excitement and adventure. Children can engage in rides and games, learn archery or swordplay, and watch the costume parade. The festival provides an immersive and educational experience, fostering a sense of wonder and imagination in the hearts of young and old alike.
As the day comes to a close, you leave with a newfound appreciation for history, culture, and the sense of community that thrives within the festival grounds. It is a captivating journey into the past, where the magic of the medieval era comes alive. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a fan of whimsical festivities, or simply seeking a unique experience, this extraordinary event is sure to leave you spellbound and longing to return to the enchanting world of knights and castles. The memories of gallant knights, fair maidens, and the jovial spirit of the event linger in your mind, reminding you of the enchantment you experienced in Larkspur, Colorado.
