Pikes Peak – Manitou Springs, CO

We have been on the Pikes Peak Cog Train with my parents a few years back, but this time we went up with Heathers parents. Is it an exhilarating adventure that offers breathtaking views and a memorable experience. Located in just west of Manitou Springs, Pikes Peak is one of the most famous mountains in the state and most-visited mountaintops anywhere in the world. It stands at an impressive elevation of 14,115 feet (4,302 meters).

As you approach Manitou Springs, you’ll be greeted by a charming town nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains. It is known for its vibrant atmosphere, unique shops, making it a delightful place to explore before or after heading up Pikes Peak. But on a busy weekend, parking can be a little tricky to find.

Once you arrive at the historic cog train station, you’ll feel a sense of anticipation as you board the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. This station has been around for many years and reminds me of something that you would see high in the Swiss Alps. This cog train is an engineering marvel, designed to ascend the steep slopes of the mountain with ease. The railway’s cogwheel mechanism allows it to navigate the rugged terrain, providing passengers with a safe and comfortable journey. They can fill up fast so we recommend reserving your seat a few months in advance.

As the cog train begins its ascent, the scenery gradually transforms. Lush forests, mountain streams and interesting rock formations, creating a stunning backdrop. You’ll witness the awe-inspiring beauty of the Rocky Mountains unfolding before your eyes. As the train chugs along, steadily climbing higher, and the air grows crisper and cooler as you gain altitude.

Throughout the journey, the knowledgeable train conductors share fascinating stories and facts about the history, geology, and wildlife of the region. They enhance your experience by providing insights into the unique ecosystem of Pikes Peak and its significance in Colorado’s heritage. You might even get to hear someone sign “America The Beautiful”. This area is the inspiration where Katharine Lee Bates wrote the lyrics for this well know song in 1893 while completing a summer teach position in Colorado Springs.

As you near the summit, the landscape undergoes a dramatic change. The vegetation becomes sparse, and rugged rocks dominate the terrain. Marmots are running around through the rocks, stopping to watch the passing train. The air thins, and you’ll feel the exhilaration of being at such a high elevation. Maybe a good time to take a puff of the oxygen that you brought. The train finally reaches its destination at the summit of Pikes Peak. Stepping off the cog train, you’re greeted by panoramic views that extend for miles in every direction. On a clear day, you can see the distant peaks of the Rocky Mountains, endless stretches of forests, and even glimpse neighboring states. The vastness and grandeur of the landscape are simply awe-inspiring.

At the summit, you have the opportunity to explore and savor the surroundings. Take a walk along the designated paths, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and feel the thrill of being on top of the world. You may even encounter wildlife like marmots or bighorn sheep, adding to the allure of the experience. Keep in mind that you will be limited with your time up on top before the train leaves to head back down. It seems like not enough time to see all that you will want to see. Talking to one of the conductors, they said that they keep the time short due to the thin air at that altitude. More than an hour up there will start to affect some people more than others. Be sure to visit the Summit House, a cozy refuge perched at the peak. Treat yourself to a warm cup of hot chocolate or indulge in the famous Pikes Peak donuts, a sweet delight that has been enjoyed by visitors for generations. They are made right there at 14,000 feet and have a light fluffy texture due to their secret recipe and the high altitude. However, keep in mind that these are not vegan.

As the cog train makes its descent back to Manitou Springs, you’ll reflect on the incredible journey you’ve just experienced. The cog train to the top of Pikes Peak offers a unique perspective of Colorado’s natural beauty. It’s an adventure that will leave an indelible mark on your memory, reminding you of the wonders that await when you wander the great outdoors.
