We met up with some good friends to discuss some upcoming travel plans and try a culinary innovation. There exists a haven for plant-based enthusiasts called Obon Shokudo. This all-plant-based restaurant not only beckons vegans but captivates anyone seeking a delightful journey into the world of Japanese comfort food flavors.
As we entered, the vibrant and cozy atmosphere immediately set the tone for an evening filled with laughter, good company, and, of course, exceptional food. The restaurant’s commitment to sustainability and plant-based cuisine was evident in its decor, reflecting a harmony with nature that extended to the menu. There seems to be some cat theme going on here too, but not sure what it represents. There are cat pictures on the walls and on the paper menu if you opt out of the QR code menu option.
Everything on the menu sounded good so we decided to order a variety by getting one of the combination plates. Each plate was a masterpiece, featuring an array of textures and tastes that showcased the versatility of plant-based ingredients. From hearty grain bowls to flavorful stir-fried veggies, the combination plates were a celebration of plant-based diversity, leaving us marveling at the chef’s artistry.
As temperatures outside dropped, the tempura udon soup proved to be the perfect choice for warmth and comfort. The broth, infused with umami goodness, enveloped thick house made udon noodles and a medley of crisp, perfectly battered tempura vegetables. Every slip was a journey through a comforting bowl of flavors, leaving us satisfied and yearning for more.
No visit to a Japanese restaurant is complete without savoring miso soup, and their plant-based version did not disappoint. The subtle complexity of miso, combined with tofu, seaweed, and green onions, created a delicate and nourishing broth. It was a testament to the restaurant’s dedication to crafting dishes that honored traditional flavors while embracing a plant-based philosophy.
Obon Shokudo exceeded our expectations, proving that plant-based dining can be an exquisite culinary adventure. From the diverse combination plates to the comforting tempura udon soup and the classic miso soup, every dish resonated with flavors that transcended the boundaries of meat-based cuisine.
If you find yourself in East Portland and you are yearning for a plant-powered dining experience that promises both innovation and comfort, gather your friends and head to Obon Shokudo. It’s more than a restaurant; it’s a celebration of plant-based delights that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the artistry of vegan cuisine.
