It was a Friday afternoon, a dinner and a show was in the near future. Another couple that we were meeting up with stopped by our place to pick us up. They were driving for the night. We were heading to a place called My Neighbor Felix LoHi in the Highland neighborhood area. It’s a popular traditional Mexican restaurant with a festive decor. In fact, this place was decorated to the hilt with Christmas decorations. It was very well put together.
We got there about 5pm and were very happy, because we did have reservations. We almost couldn’t get in the front door, this place was so packed, it looked like there was standing room only at the bar area. We were quickly taken to our table and started to look through the menu, annoyingly the QR code version. The waiter seemed to notice the annoyance and asked if we would like a paper version, yes please. I had not looked at the menu previously to see what plant based options that had, if any. A lot of times Mexican restaurants have some sort of vegetarian options that can be made plant based fairly easily, mainly just removing the cheese or sauce. If not, chips and salsa are always a backup. However, we were happily surprised to see that they had Tacos & Beyond. It says that it is made with Impossible beef, but being that the name says Beyond it’s a little confusing. Is it Impossible meat or Beyond meat?
We each ordered a couple of the tacos off the happy hour menu, along with a side of black beans and rice (didn’t get a picture of that, sorry). And let’s not forget an order of Salsa Trio with chips, we were set. I was a little disappointed with how many chips you get in comparison to how much salsa you got. We ended up having to ask for a little more chips. The place was very crowded and a little noisy to be able to talk amongst ourselves easily, but we managed. The food came out quickly for how busy they were and our waiter was on the ball. He kept stopping by to check on us. The tacos were pretty good but I felt like they were a little salty. I think that was more the taste of the Impossible meat than the other fillings. I think I would have been more happy with mushroom or cauliflower tacos, but they did the job. This place has been on our list to try and we were pleased with the whole package. They do have some other locations in the Denver area but so far this is the first one we have tried. Would we come to this place again? Sure. They don’t have a huge selection of plant based options but I am sure you could have them fix something other than the tacos. We finished up and headed off to see the Colorado Symphony perform “A Colorado Christmas”
