Montrose, CO - Cedar Creek Lodging & RV Park

There isn’t much to see once you leave Grand Junction and work your way south towards Montrose except a dry desert landscape. Probably a 4 wheelers heaven, but not scenic. Luckily all the destinations we want to see are only short drives in-between each other and soon we would arrive into the town of Montrose and the home of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Detouring from their own camping adventures in Eastern Utah and North Central Arizona, Jon’s parents are on the road headed our way.
Arriving into Montrose on Labor Day the town was unbelievably quiet and none of the downtown shops were open, we were not going to do a lot of exploring of the downtown. We were staying at a small campground just to the east of the downtown area called Cedar Creek Lodging & RV Park. It’s actually a fairly big camp ground right in town and walking distance to a few places to eat, a couple Mexican restaurants and a steakhouse if you are into that kind of food. Nick, the owner of the campground, was great and very helpful getting us set up into spots that fit our trailers. The spots are a little narrow and you have to be a little careful of the trees. But they have everything that you need, power, water and sewer. There is also a laundry mat if you needed to wash some clothes and WIFI if you need. They even provide recycling, which is something that we have not seen much of here in Colorado. Down by the river there are a few small cabins and a couple static trailers that set up. They are also available to rent for the night if you don’t have a trailer or tent. Overall, this was a great place to camp and it is only a 20-minute drive to the south entrance of the National Park.
We took a drive around the small town, which didn’t take very long but we did find the Riverbottom Park. The Uncompahgre River runs through the park and we saw people river surfing. The river in this section is set up like the Deschutes in the Old Mill District in Bend, Oregon. Where in the warm days of summer you can float, kayak or river surf. It was pretty cool, but the river was cold and a wet suit is defiantly required as well as a helmet, and surfboard. The park has all kinds of fun activities like a mini rock climbing wall to playground for kids and adults who want to feel like a kid again, swings anyone?
Sometimes I swear we can’t get away from planes or trains. Why are some of the best camping spots near active train tracks but this morning was planes. The nearby Montrose airport woke us up nice and early as an airplane needed an air start. If you didn’t know, they are loud! Luckily once the plane left, we were able to go back to sleep for a little bit longer before our move to Ouray, the Switzerland of America.
Thanks for wandering with us,
