We took a trip from Seattle to Portland to see some family and friends for the weekend. On a busy traffic-filled Friday afternoon we headed south. We had planned to stop and eat somewhere along the way. Heather found a place in Olympia that seemed promising. It was a small place just off the freeway called K-Town Rice Bowl and Grill.
Their menu showed some vegan options and typically you can get veggies and tofu options at places like these. They had a few vegan options here and there throughout the menu. We decided to try a Jap-Jae with Vegan Bulgogi. I was not sure what vegan Bulgogi was but it looked like beef. Later looking it up, it is Korean BBQ Beef, in this case a vegan version of the Korean BBQ Beef.
The Jap-Jae with Vegan Bulgogi is a big bowl of sweet potato noodles that are stir-fried with carrots, onions, broccoli, and zucchini all on a bed of rice. It comes with toppings of bean sprouts and radish kimchi and one other that we were not sure what it was. It was like a pickled root of some sort.
We also ordered a side of the vegetable pot stickers. These were not marked as vegan but didn’t have meat in them. Ask your server if they are vegan and if you have any dietary restrictions.
It was not very busy while we were there but there were a few people that came in to pick up orders to go. The pot stickers came out first and looked to be deep-fried, and very crispy. I think that I would have rather had them steamed but they were still good and had a good flavor. The rest of the food came out quickly and it was a good-sized portion for us to share.
The bowl was very good and they give you a lot of rice with it. Sometimes these places seem to skimp on the rice. This was a good stop on our trip down to Portland and may be an option for us in the future since we know where it is and know that they have vegan options. But we are always looking for other places to explore as well. If you know of any good vegan places in the Olympia area, please let us know.
