If you are in Hood River Oregon for any reason, you need to stop by Golden Goods Sandwich and Bake Shop and try one of their sandwiches. We were passing through on our way to Portland and stopped to get a bite to eat. We found that Hood River had an all-vegan place and decided to check it out.
Golden Goods Sandwich and Bake Shop is located on Oak Street between 2nd and 1st. It’s a small place with a handful of seating available. You order at their front counter and find a place to sit. While we were there it was fairly busy. We decided to share the Mushroom Po’ Boy that is made with fried oyster mushrooms, lettuce, red onions, tomato and remoulade. Remoulade is a traditional French sauce, originally made with ingredients such as mayonnaise, herbs, capers, pickles. But they make their own vegan version here. It also comes with what looks like homemade potato chips, seasoned with salt.
We have not had a good Po’ Boy sandwich since starting a plant-based lifestyle, so we were looking forward to trying this one. Since it was kind of busy it took a while for them to make it and bring it out. Which also means that it was fresh and not already premade, sitting in the back.
They brought it out to the table where we were sitting and at first look at this sandwich, I was wondering how I am going to bite into this, it’s pretty thick. We were able to manage and found that the fried oyster mushrooms were delicious. Delicious! The oyster mushrooms were seasoned very well with what reminded me of a Louisiana style seasoning and the mushrooms had a chicken-like consistency. Heather thought that it was fried a little too much, but I liked the crispiness of it. It gives a crunch when you bite into it. We would have liked to have a little more of the remoulade sauce but it wasn’t too bad. The potato chips were not bad but I didn’t feel like those were anything too special. I am not sure if they were made fresh there or were store bought, but I would assume homemade.
I would definitely stop here again to have this sandwich, but would also want to try some of their other options too. That would be the hard part, to decide whether to get something different or go with something that I already know is delicious! Again, if you are in Hood River and looking for a good plant based, vegan restaurant, this is the place to stop.
