Cold Spring Tavern – Santa Barbara, CA

We had heard about the Cold Spring Tavern with its historical presents and its delicious food. There’s not much for a vegan to eat there since one of their specialties is the tri tip sandwiches, but you can make it work. The tri tip sandwiches looked very good and I am sure that they were, but we don’t eat those. For the non-meat eaters they do offer a grilled vegetable salad and a veggie burger just minus the chipotle mayo and jack cheese for the vegans.

Upon arriving at the tavern, you notice its rustic charm. The building looked as though it had been plucked straight out of the Old West, with its weathered wooden exterior. Which, in a sense, it was plucked out of the Old West. It was built in 1860 and in 1868 began operating as a stagecoach stop between Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez Valley. It has been in business ever since and has not changed. It is still the original buildings that served the stagecoach riders back in the day.

The menu is filled with mouth-watering options, but we decided to go with the veggie burger and fries. They were also offering a daily special of the local mushrooms deep fried like their onion rings. Not the healthiest of meals but we didn’t have a lot of options. The burger was stacked high with fresh veggies and a savory patty that looked homemade. The fries were crispy and perfectly seasoned.

Get there before they open or make reservations as it can get very crowded and parking is very limited. More than likely you will have to park on the street before or after the restaurant and walk. Keep in mind that they are closed on Tuesday and Wednesdays so plan accordingly. The Cold Spring Tavern was more than just a restaurant – it is a slice of history and a testament to the beauty of California’s Central Coast. From the rustic atmosphere to the delicious food, it was an experience that we will never forget.

If you’re ever in the Santa Barbara area, I highly recommend stopping by for a meal and a trip back in history. Whether you’re a vegan or a meat-lover, there’s something on the menu for everyone. And with its charming atmosphere and friendly staff, it’s a dining experience that you won’t want to miss.
