One of our first stops on our Florida trip was St. Augustine, a city of history and culture. One of the city’s most iconic landmarks is the Castillo de San Marcos fort, a 17th-century Spanish fortress that has stood the test of time. In fact, the city was built around this historic fort.
The fort was built by the Spanish in the late 1600s to protect their interests in the New World. It is made of a stone called coquina, a type of shell stone that is unique to the area. Due to this type of stone, it was said that cannon balls either bounced off the walls or got embedded into the wall, not leaving much damage. The fort saw its fair share of battles and was occupied by the Spanish, British, and Americans at different times in its history. Today, the Castillo de San Marcos is a National Monument and a popular tourist attraction.
The fort is located right in the heart of St. Augustine, just a short walk from the city center. If you’re driving, there is a paid parking lot nearby, but finding a parking spot can be a challenge. The fort is also accessible by public transportation, including the Old Town Trolley and the Red Train Tours.
Admission to the National Monument is $15 for adults and free for children under 16 when accompanied by an adult. If you have the National Park annual pass it will work here too. The fort is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with extended hours in the summer months. I recommend arriving early to avoid crowds and to have plenty of time to explore the fort.
The Castillo de San Marcos is a fascinating place to explore, with plenty of history to discover. One of the highlights of the fort is the terreplein where you can see the cannons that were used to defend the fort. The fort also has a dry moat, two drawbridges, and several rooms and chambers to explore. The National Park Service offers guided tours throughout the day, which provide a deeper insight into the fort’s history and architecture. While we were here, they had actors dressed up in 17th Spanish & British military attire. If not for all the other visitors you could almost imagine what it was like during that time period.
Wear comfortable shoes: The fort has uneven terrain and steep stairs, so comfortable shoes are a must. There are no fences or ropes along the edges so be careful when exploring near the walls. Bring sunscreen and water: The Florida sun can be intense, so make sure to protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated. Check the weather: The fort is mostly outdoors, so be sure to check the weather before your visit and dress accordingly. Florida is known for daily thunderstorms that roll through from time to time.
In conclusion, it is a must-visit attraction in St. Augustine, Florida. The fort’s rich history and unique architecture make it a fascinating place to explore. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a fun way to spend the day, the Castillo de San Marcos is well worth a visit.
