When we first moved to Denver, a friend told me that I need to try Beau Jo’s Colorado Style Pizza. I said “yeah, I would get to it at some point”. Well that never actually happened, then the plant-based diet came into play and the pizza was kind of out. We have never really found a good plant-based (vegan) cheese to replace the real thing. So, we just stayed away from the pizza places because of that.
Well, recently we were in Fort Collins for the day with family and they wanted to get pizza. They just happen to have a Beau Jo’s located on North College Ave, the main street through town. We figured that we could find something there to eat, maybe a salad. We were happy to find out that they did in fact have a vegan agave wheat crust, plant-based pepperoni and Italian sausage along with a dairy free cheese. Well, how can you pass up a pizza with all of that.
We ended up getting the Lil’ Italy pizza. It comes with the roasted garlic olive oil sauce, tomatoes, mushrooms, black olives. We substituted the pepperoni, parmesan and provolone cheeses for the plant-based pepperoni and light on the dairy free cheese. When the pizza came out it looked delicious. It was pretty good, and I am not sure exactly what the dairy free cheese brand was, but there is still nothing that we have found that will replace the real thing. The cheese wasn’t bad and it tasted fine, but it was very crispy and not melted like it should be. Sometimes it makes me want to switch to a Mediterranean or vegetarian diet for the day. I do miss a good cheese every once in a while. Also, I thought that the roasted garlic olive oil sauce would be good but it seemed a little dry, probably due to the light diary free cheese. I think if we were to go there again, I would get something with a tomato base sauce. The plant-based pepperoni wasn’t too bad but it seemed like it got cooked a little too much and they were crunchy, but not bad. I might try the plant-based Italian sausage next time. However, the crust on this was delicious. I could have eaten just the crust and dipped it in a marinara sauce.
We will definitely try them again and they have multiple locations across the Colorado area, mostly close to the Denver area. My friend was right they are pretty good and worth trying.
